Clear strategy on portfolios, pathways and payors
Positioning for Growth Across Full-Service Hospitals and Focused Clinics
Hospital markets are evolving in two directions: full-service hospitals competing on breadth and complex care, and specialist or day-case clinics competing on focus, speed and efficiency. Investors have three well-established strategies in this space—consolidation, new-build roll-out, and vertical integration—with ophthalmology, oncology and orthopaedics at the forefront. Focused clinics can deliver higher throughput and better outcomes when case selection, pathways and reimbursement align, but they remain exposed if tariffs reset or if technology advances make single procedures more commoditised.
We work with investors and operators to determine where and how value can be created. Our projects span commercial due diligence, portfolio reviews and growth strategy across both general hospitals and specialist platforms. We assess unit economics by case-mix and payor, stress-test staffing and consultant incentive models, evaluate hub-and-spoke structures including joint ventures, and quantify the value of shifting care to day-case, outpatient or community settings. The goal is a defensible position that balances the efficiency of focus with the resilience of a broader service mix.
Market dynamics differ by country. Germany’s dual financing supports a substantial private hospital sector. Spain’s blend of private insurance and regional contracting enables multi-speciality hospitals to scale. In the UK, the private market remains smaller and more elective-focused, where specialist roll-outs and NHS contracting often outperform attempts to build large private general hospitals. The right strategy recognises these fundamentals—leaning into focused clinics where payors reward efficiency, and pursuing full-service hospital models only where policy and funding structures support them.

Our specialist hospital leads
Our teams combine scientific expertise with deal experience. We bring rigour to forecasting and valuation, assess regulatory and market access dynamics, and help frame development strategies that appeal to potential partners or acquirers. This ensures that investment cases are built on realistic assumptions and that transactions are structured to capture fair value.
Beyond transactions, we support operational priorities such as target operating model design, performance improvement, and digital and data strategy. By combining strategic clarity with an understanding of scientific and clinical realities, we help biotech firms and their backers make sound decisions in an increasingly competitive market.
